Since USFS is now allowingvirtual testing we are giving it a try in January.

The following is tips from a judge (Barbara Buch) for filming your submission;

1) If you are filming, put your phone or camera on a tripod. There is nothing more annoying than trying to watch a bouncing picture.

2) Focus on the skater before you start to film. Having the focus zoom in and out constantly during a performance can make one nauseous.....

3) Start recording before the music starts and a few seconds after it stops so you capture the opening and ending of a program. Its so unfortunate when a video starts in the middle of a program or cuts out before the skater finishes.

4) Get the whole skater in frame. We need to see your feet as well as your face.

5) A sense of flow is difficult sometimes on video. Make sure that the scope is not so close to the skater so as to preclude an understanding of ice coverage

6) Skaters should wear something that is comfortable but does not obscure the ability to see arms and leg lines.

7) Don't film through mesh fence or plexiglass. Try to get to rinkside or on ice to get a clear view of the skater performing.

😎 Make sure that objects, people or parts of the rink do not obscure full view of the skaters and their feet. (especially corners, boards/barriers, coaches or skaters at the side,etc)

9) Work it out so that other skaters give the performing skater right of way during their program. Nothing is more distracting than having other skaters come in and out of frame while a skater is performing.

10) If you are filming, don't talk during the video, and as a corollary, before submitting a video, make sure that the music can be heard throughout the program.

11) Before filming and submitting make sure you use a universally used format. Don't use some brand new format such that no official can open the video.

Hope this is helpful!
